MikroFraming is a series of projects including Project Drawings, Detailed CutLists, Shop-Tested-Sequencing, Exclusive "knock-down" Patented Hardware, CNC Templates, Work Stations, Video Tutorials and Hands-On Training. All intended to help Pro and Semi-Pro Woodworkers build then sell completed projects for a profit.
MikroFraming projects are larger than many woodworkers might be used to. You won't have "customers" you'll have "clients". All MikroFraming projects are Post and Rail such as beds, bunks, dorm-room lofts, raised garden beds, bases for large farmhouse-style dining tables, heavy-duty castered workbenches; and more. Why stop there? Why not add a fabric, steel or corrugated roof to make screen rooms, garden sheds, hunting blinds, ice fishing shacks and firewood shelters? All very, very doable by most woodworkers even in small shops via MikroFraming, mentoring and our patented "knock-down" hardware.
MikroFraming projects are "much larger than a breadbox". Large projects need to be "Knock-Down" to fit through doorways, to build in small shops; to ship via UPS, FedEx and Spee-Dee!. All MikroFramed projects are "Knock-down" via our exclusive, patented "MikroTenons, a threaded metal tenon that allows components to be assembled, disassembled, and reassembled an unlimited number of times without loss of structural integrity or aesthetics.
The unique, multi-circle shape of a MikroTenon™ is protected by a U.S. Design Patent. The function, aka "utility", of a MikroTenon™ is also protected by a U.S. Utility Patent. I have the metal tenons laser-fabricated from 1/4" mild steel but can be custom-ordered in stainless and aluminum. There are two versions, one with 3 holes the other with 5. One or more of those holes is either factory-tapped or ready for DIY tapping to receive a threaded bolt. The other holes are reserved for fasteners to permanently mount the tenon to the Rails or Posts.
MikroFraming is a production-capable system intended for Pro and Semi-Professional Woodworkers that build custom furniture, garden beds, railings or small roofed structures as well as for Manufacturers of furniture, garden beds, and small structures wanting to improve production methods, reduce shipping costs and simplify consumer assembly via our patented knock-down products. Check out our Collaboration Page.
MikroTenons™ are permanently mounted to either the Rails or the Posts using two GRK Fasteners. Tenons can also be mounted on metal using hybrid methods or welded. Custom CNC-Created Templates are used to accurately align and quickly mount tenons. The only power tools needed for mounting are a hand-held router (18V works great) and a cordless impact driver. That's It! No expensive tenoning jigs, bandsawing or whatevers...:-)
Unlike the deep mortises of traditional mortise and tenon joinery the cavities for MikroTenons™ are only 1/4" deep. The patented shape of our tenons allows for two mortising methods. One option is the "router-method" where a Custom CNC-Created Template is hand-clamped to a board to rout the shallow mortise with a hand-held (18V) router. That's It! No mortising machines, chisels or expensive jigs.
A 2nd method for creating the mortises involves a similar Custom Template (but with holes in lieu of a rectangle) and a Forstner Bit. The Template has 5 aligned holes sized to receive either a Metalworker's Transfer Punch or Self-Centering Hinge Bit to "dimple" for piloting. After removing the Template the very sharp tip of a Forstner Bit (typically mounted in a small drillpress but can be hand-held) is placed in the dimple to prevent "bit-jump" then to bore the 1/4" deep overlapping-circle mortise to receive the goofy-shaped, patented threaded MikroTenon™
MikroTenons™ are equally at home on angled applications, a task nearly impossible with traditional mortise and tenon. Applications such as diagonal stretchers on the base of a farmhouse-style dining table or where rafters meet ridge boards or headers on angled roof structural projects. Again our Custom Templates make this an amazingly simple process for either hobbyist, semi-pro, pro or on a production scale.
Because there is a learning curve we offer Hobbyist Workshops at venues here in Wisconsin and beyond. Attendees are provided detailed drawings, CutLists, Templates, hardware and then, together, we build an Heirloom Bed, a farmhouse table, a Raised Garden Bed or a Roofed MikroShelter. MikroFraming, once learned, provides the woodworker with a lifetime of projects to build as gifts, sale and production.
MikroTenons are NOT for Sale to the general public. Due to the "learning curve", knowing how, where and when to install MikroTenons™; having the right tools and bits to rout mortises and install the tenons; to use our copyrighted Project Designs, CutLists and Templates; and to access certain hard-to-find 3rd party fasteners and bits... For all of the above, and other reasons, MikroFraming is only available to Pro and Semi-Pro woodworkers, furniture and structure manufacturers, and are included in the Materials Package for Hobbyists attending one of our Hobbyist DIY Workshops.
